This project is an interactive performance of the theatre of the senses, which was specially developed for alternative space – Hall 3. Its main purpose is to create an innovative cultural product, unknown and never shown to Varna audience to date, combining elements from various creative genres and disciplines, as well as to train group of young people including youths from the vulnerable environment, in methods of sensory theatre. Young people will actively participate in the creation and organization of three performances, will expand their knowledge in the field of contemporary art, will acquire the skills, enabling them for professional development in future projects. The interactive approach of the project provokes the active participation of the audience, which becomes the main character in creative interaction. It is involved in the creative process by activating the sensory, emotional and associative world. The method of the theatre of the senses gives the opportunity for inclusion of the people of different social environment in the cultural life by promoting understanding and awareness among the diverse groups in society
The biggest difference between the traditional theatre and the theatre of the sensory labyrinth is the fact that, in the last silent scene and in the whole process... there is no audience. The main feature of the method of sensory theatre is that visitors are not passive viewers of the show, prepared in advance and are actively involved in the theatre-interaction. The audience passes individually in a specially prepared spatial-theatrical installation, each spectator passage is rich with unique personal meetings with actors and with intense sensory portals (often in the dark, in order to limit the visual sense and to unlock the remaining – hearing, smell, taste, touch). In these meetings the visitor defines what is the story, the game or the point of it. Associations, images and memories are unlocked and thanks to the active interaction with the actors, visitors are the main characters of the story they wrote themselves. The idea of a Youth Theatre of Sences originated in a spirit of Varna 2017 – European Cultural Capital. The performance does not follow a script and is inspired by the space and two main factors:
Alternative space which attracts unconventional thinking and creative young people and of the opportunity of using the "site-specific" method of the theatre of the sensory labyrinth, which actively involves the audiences in the creative process by activating their emotional, sensory, and associative world.
The main objective of the project is organizing a training in the method of sensory theatre, the result of which will be the realization of three performances in Hall 3 in Varna. The project will involve young people from the vulnerable environment of the Black Sea region, which will promote the development of their professional career in the field of creative industries, creative communication and in group expression, basic knowledge in methods of theatre of the sensory labyrinth, skills to stimulate the senses and their use in order to create certain situations and get messages across. There will be introduction to working with non-verbal methods of communication and selfawareness, introduction to the knowledge of archetypes and symbols and developing the mindset for ministering to others. Participants will do a workshop which will result in participation in a sensory performance they will create together with the leading staff. This is a practice that will meet them face to face with the audience and train the power of their presence in a role, their capacity for improvisation, sensitivity and flexibility in each situation, which can appear in a live performance.
