The project is aiming to create an adapted instrument for development of social entrepreneurship - a guide for individuals and organizations. In the year of the European Youth Capital where the main focus is set up on social innovations, How to Start a Social StartUp will produce a flexible system of indicators, advices and methods through which the ideas of young people who want to become social entrepreneurs can be tested and developed through business instruments. the project is based on the practical and theoretical experience of Stoyana Stoeva and Maya Doneva - co-authors of the bid book of Varna 2017 EYC candidate city with an accent on social innovations and founders of the Social Teahouse - one of the most successful social start ups on the Balkans. the project unites their experience with the professionals from PONT Group - Romania, who are specialized in strategic planning and development of youth policy, education, training and community activities. Within the frame of the project will be held two work meetings between social entrepreneurs, activists from the NGO sector and academic professionals in the field of the social entrepreneurship and will be designed a guide, which will be spread on- and offline in Bulgarian and English in the partnership networks of Cluj EYC and Varna EYC.
The project unites the experience of IDEA Association from its 3 years participation in the business incubator of Reach for Change Bulgaria competition for social entrepreneurs and the mentorship program of the Bulgarian Centre for Nonprofit Law, where in the latest our team received award for Best business plan for social enterprise for 2017. Within the incubator and the mentorship program we have participated also training on topics such as: Financial model, Social impact, Social effect and business balance, Legal framework for social enterprises, Design thinking, Products and causes, etc.
there were many case when we have discussed the lack of appropriate source in Bulgarian that offers compact information on all of these topics necessary for the adequate business and social planning needed for a successful and sustainable social startup. The current project is our declaration to dedicate our expertise and to create a basic instrument for test out and development of ideas of future social enterprises, in a state that still does not have appropriate legal framework, but in a context in which the social enterprises are extremely fruitful instrument for development of the environment. It was 3-4 years when social innovations were put on the table of public discussions in Bulgaria and there were only 2 or 3 social enterprises in the country and not more than 1 event dedicated to the topic. nowadays the social entrepreneurs are in Forbes charts, TV news of NOVA and receive awards both on their business achievements and the social compact they produce. Varna’s focus on social innovations implies not only practical sharing of good practices in the field but also encouragement of the environment and development of methods for creation of new startups. The final outcome of this project will give young people opportunity to produce their ideas in social enterprises, and having the fact that this guidebook will be translated in English will exceed its effect outside Varna and Bulgaria.
The proposed project is aiming to stimulate the development of entrepreneurial ecosystem in the field of the social entrepreneurship through provision of specific instruments and methods for test out and development of concepts. the Specific objectives are:
Improvement of development opportunities for social entrepreneurship through designing a basic startup instrument (guidebook)
Creating the fundamentals of community of potential social entrepreneurs and facilitation of communication between them aiming to create a network for mutual support.
Additionally to this the effect we think we will be able to achieve is in the following areas:
− recognition of the social entrepreneurship as solution to the youth unemployment
− development of cross sectorial partnerships;
− development of relations between the youth and business sectors aiming to serve for mutual support in future initiatives as well for exchange of employees.
− development of soft and entrepreneurial skills though non-formal education of young people as well as young persons from underprivileged background
− preparation of young people for the new professions of the future, not included in the educational programs of the mainstream schools;
− provision of expert mentorship and support in an underdeveloped field lacking of enough sources and reference reading in Bulgarian language
− Visibility of the social innovation topic and social entrepreneurship, also
− visibility for Varna 2017
− improvement of the partnership between Cluj and Varna in the context of the EYC titles and
− positioning of Varna on the map of social entrepreneurship with especially developed working instrument.
